Paperwhite Maintenance

So it’s already clear that I love Paperwhites – they smell so good and there is nothing more rewarding than growing flowers from a bulb (especially in the middle of winter)! The only problem is that they fall over, almost immediately after they bloom, and require support. Although I have jimmy-rigged paperwhites in a variety of different ways through the years, this year’s version is by far the most aesthetically pleasing! I went shopping in my kitchen and used 4 bamboo skewers and simple kitchen string. I love the rustic-chic look!

First Tip/Trick: Binder Clips!

One of my ideas for this new blog is to share tips and tricks. I do pride myself on being a “queen of efficiency” both in terms of time and in making the best use of the things I already have. I don’t think there is much excuse to be wasteful: of time, energy or things  – so I’ll make sure to share all of my discoveries as I pursue the quest to be The Queen of Efficiency!

So on to the first trick: Binder clips! Binder clips are probably the most common item found in my kitchen. I use them to close just about everything. For those of us that work in corporate offices they are (ahem) **free** and otherwise are very inexpensive. Best of all, they are hearty enough to stand up to daily use and the freezer – just take a look at mine!

(PS: I’m on a smoothie kick – to explain the rediculous quantity of frozen fruit)

This Season’s Throw Pillows

Making throw pillow covers is nearly a seasonal event for me. I think there is no better way to give a quick face-lift to a room and I really enjoy using pillows to celebrate seasons. Summer, of course, is the most fun for this. The pillows I made in Spring of 2009 (below) are still some of my favorites!

This winter I decided not to use wool, as I have in the past, and instead used a 2-ply jersey from my all-time favorite Banksville Designer Fabrics in Norwalk, CT. The particular jersey is actually from Diane Von Furstenberg – which I think explains the amazing colors!

I made these pillows using a box weaving technique. The Jersey is perfect not just for its snuggle factor (it is basically glorified sweatshirt material) but also because it has great stretch and doesn’t fray. That means the pillows can take a beating and you can just wiggle any twisted or shifted pieces back into place.

I also made oversized (20″) pillows this time around – so nice this time of year!

As you may have noticed from the sidebar on the right, I am currently working on getting an Etsy store up and running! The goal is to launch later this winter with a series of throw pillow covers just like these – just in time for that harsh end of winter when we could all use a dose of bright yellow, orange and red to remind us that Spring is right around the corner!

The First Paperwhite!

I am always so excited for the first Paperwhite of winter to bloom! The little, wonderfully scented flowers always give me optimism for spring (even when it is months away). It’s such a shame that the first bloom came on such a gross day: snow/rain/ice – does not make me think of spring…

Popcorn: One of My Favorite Snacks

Yesterday my friend Cate Sturgess had a really fun Golden Globes party at her apartment – I took advantage of the opportunity to practice my popcorn making skills! I do make basic air popped popcorn fairly frequently, experimenting with caramel corn is the new hobby.

Caramel corn really isn’t that hard to make, for me the intimating part is making the caramel without second guessing myself (I don’t have a candy thermometer so I just eye it, not shockingly)

Ingredients:
20 cups air popped popcorn
1 cup butter
2 cups light brown sugar
1/2 cup corn syrup
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup chopped pecans
1 teaspoon vanilla extract – This is your opportunity to go crazy, replace vanilla with 3 ozs bourbon – if you want to go really crazy 20 cups of popcorn can handle about a pound of chopped bacon

Directions:
Preheat oven to 250 degrees
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter.
Stir in brown sugar, corn syrup and salt and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
Boil without stirring for 4 minutes – test by dipping in a spoon and the caramel should coat the back of the spoon and basically look like caramel!
Remove from heat and stir in soda and vanilla – this is where I freak out, the soda causes the caramel to foam up and turn a much lighter color brown, this is ok – just go with it
Pour over popcorn, tossing and mixing to coat.
Transfer to baking dishes (if needed) and bake, stirring every 15 minutes, for 1 hour. Remove from oven, break into pieces and let cool completely – I spread it all out on wax paper on the dining table
(recipe adapted from All Recipes)

For all of us living in small apartments, the biggest challenge in making a recipe like this can be having the appropriate vessel. I make this whole recipe in my oversized roasting pan. As I pop the popcorn it goes right in the pan, the caramel gets poured on top, mixed in and baked all in one. Before I owned this amazing pan (it was a Christmas gift – thanks Mom!) I used two cookie sheets (well coated with cooking spray) for baking and several large mixing bowls for mixing the caramel into the popcorn. It is important to mix the caramel into the popcorn quickly, so if you’re worried about juggling, making the caramel in two batches can be a good idea.

For Cate’s I also made a second kind of popcorn, the much less indulgent Lemon Dill Popcorn:
10 cups air popped popcorn
1/4 cup butter
2 tablespoons chopped lemon peel
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
Salt to taste

Place popcorn in 1 gallon sized Ziplock bag
Melt butter, mix in lemon zest, dill and salt
Pour flavored butter over popcorn in Ziplock, seal and shake until evenly covered

This basic recipe is how I make the majority of my popcorn. My simple favorite is about 3-4 cups popcorn tossed with 1 tablespoon of melted butter and less than a teaspoon of honey – perfect sweet and savory snack! While simple can be tasty, popcorn is a great opportunity to experiment – italian spices with grated Parmesan, even curry and cumin for some serious flare – go crazy!

Satur Farms

Dear Satur Farms,

This is the 3rd clamp shell of greens that I have purchased, from varying outlets, which has been at least 1/3 rotted and un-usable. The most recent clamp shell was opened 7 days before the expiration date with the same result.

Now I understand that having made three purchases, expecting different outcomes, should simply teach me to never buy from them again – however I can’t get past my drive to buy local! When faced with the option to buy Earthbound Farms or Satur Farms I really do want to buy NY Local – except when your product disappoints.

Beyond disappointment, it is completely unacceptable for a $4+ box of salad greens to be bad a full week ahead of the stated expiration, require me to sift through and scrape the rotted bits off of the potentially edible bits, reducing the entire quantity down to less than 4oz.

Worse than the waste of my money and my time, you know what makes me really want to eat a salad? A handful of slimy, rotted lettuce bits and a pool of brown liquid in my hand (as I sift through trying to make said salad). Satur Farms, to add insult to injury – you also ruined my lunch.

Wow! New Sewing Machine

My new Brother cs-6000i arrived last week and I finally took it out of the box today! It is so lightweight and simple, I swear it was all set up – including threading the bobbin and machine – in 15 minutes! So intuitive I was adjusting stitch length and tension without opening the instruction manual. I can’t wait to really see what this baby can do!

Viva Terra

Since moving in October, I suddenly receive about 2x as many catalogs as I did at my last apartment – many of which I have never heard of, but do arrive with my name and address properly on the mailing label. I am curious what box I checked or didn’t check in the change of address process to have made this happen – although because I am mostly delighted by this development, I’m not too worried about it!

One of the new catalogs I recently received is Viva Terra “inspired green living”. As pulled from the “About us” section of their site:

Our name VivaTerra or living earth is inspired by our dedication to living in harmony with nature – for a healthier life now and for future generations. All of our products reflect a commitment to:

ecology and elegance: The finest goods that uniquely fuse exceptional quality and design with eco sensitivities.

organic, sustainable sources: The purest ingredients and sustainable resources possible – selected to be the best available.

earth and people friendly: Partners and suppliers who share our values and work to make a positive difference in the world.

handcrafted by artisans: Distinctive goods of uncommon value, handcrafted by passionate designers and artisans.

celebrate life: Celebrate life and human spirit by honoring traditions from cultures around the world.

They even offer “Climate-Friendly Shipping”, which allows you to balance the carbon emissions from the delivery of your purchase for only $1 – pretty cool!

Although I think their organic clothing and accessories leave much to be desired, there are several pieces for the home that really jump out to me as unique and awesome!

These Twisty Stools are hand carved in Thailand out of a single piece of monkeypod (raintree) wood. At 18″ and 23″ high they can be used as stools or side tables, alone or together – so beautiful and unique, especially for their reasonable price! (18″: $165; 23″: $195; Set of 2, 1 each: $319)

These Agate Plates and Coasters are simply fabulous! They are polished from Brazilian stones with the original stone edge kept intact (they also have rubber feet to protect your table). I personally prefer the teal to natural, for sure! (Plate: $65; Coasters, set of 4: $59)

Finally, I am totally enchanted by these Hawaiian Volcano Plants! Anthurium (shown above, a few other tropical plants and ferns are also available) is anchored in a native hand-selected porous rock, they have even been blessed by a Kahuna (Hawaiian spiritual leader) to bring joy and prosperity to their owners. ($55, Special through 2/10/11: $45)

Thank you USPS for introducing me to Viva Terra. I look forward to more discoveries in my mailbox and more gems from Viva Terra!
